The Colorado Avalanche have signed wingers Antti Laaksonen and Ian Laperriere to multi-year contracts.
''The Colorado Avalanche is excited to add two players with the speed, grit, and durability that Antti and Ian possess to our lineup,'' said Colorado Avalanche president and general manager Pierre Lacroix. ''Many local hockey fans will remember Antti from his successful four-year playing career at the University of Denver, and the presence of both these wingers will add depth to our lineup.''
Laaksonen has played the last four seasons with the Minnesota Wild. He finished fourth on the Wild in scoring with 12 goals and 14 assists while playing an average of 16:02 minutes per game. He playing in 323 of Minnesota's 328 games over their history, and holds the Wild record or consecutive games played with 288.
Laaksonen was originally selected by the Boston Bruins 191st overall in the 1997 Entry Draft. He has 62 goals and 68 assists and 96 penalty minutes in 361 career NHL games.
Laperriere has played the last eight full NHL seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. A veteran of 694 NHL games during the regular season, Laperriere has totaled 78 goals and 126 with 1242 penalty minutes. He has participated in 35 career playoff games, posting two goals, seven assists, and 50 penalty minutes.
Laperriere collected ten goal and 22 assists with the Kings last season. His season was limited to 62 games after he sustained a concussion on November 25, forcing him to miss 19 games through January 6.

The Atlanta Thrashers have agreed to terms with defenceman Jaroslav Modry.
The 33-year-old Modry registered 32 points (five goals, 27 assists) and 44 penalty minutes in 79 games with Los Angeles last season. He topped the Kings with 24:23 per game of ice tice, a plus-11 rating and 196 shots. He also led the team's blue liners in assists and shared first in scoring.
Modry has earned 185 points (40 goals, 145 assists) and 330 penalty minutes in 490 games over 10 NHL seasons with New Jersey, Ottawa and Los Angeles. Over the past three seasons, Modry has missed just five games, including a career-best 82 contests with Los Angeles in 2002-03. Of Modry's 40 career goals, 22 have come on the power play.
He has collected three points (one goal, two assists) and six penalty minutes in 19 Stanley Cup playoff games. He also helped the Czech Republic claim fourth place at the 2003 World Championships, notching three assists in nine games.

The Chicago Blackhawks got busy in the NHL's free-agent market Friday, signing unrestricted free agents Curtis Brown and Mathew Barnaby to multi-year deals.
Brown, who became unrestricted after the San Jose Sharks didn't qualify him Wednesday night, signed a four-year, $6.8-million US contract (averaging $1.7 million per season). Barnaby, who leaves Colorado, agreed to a three-year, $5.25-million deal (averaging $1.75 million).
Also Friday, the Calgary Flames re-signed tough guy Chris Simon, who was unrestricted. The Flames also dipped into the free-agent market and signed forward Byron Ritchie from Florida. Financial terms were not immediately available.
But the Hawks grabbed the early spotlight, which is not surprising considering they had only $6 million US committed to their payroll for next season when the free-agent market opened Thursday.
``We're in good position to do so,'' Dale Tallon, Chicago's assistant GM, said on the phone Friday.
Brown, a two-way centre, had 11 goals, 14 assists and a plus-3 rating in 80 games with Buffalo and San Jose last season while making $1.6 million. He was brought over at the trade deadline by the Sharks but was surprisingly cut loose Wednesday night.
``We were surprised Brown became available,'' said Tallon. ``He's only 28, and fits right into what we're trying to do with our young core.''
Barnaby, 31, had 16 goals, 25 assists and 157 penalty minutes in 82 games with the New York Rangers and Avalanche last season, when he earned $1.6 million. The Hawks know what they have in the pesky Barnaby.
``He's a character guy, and he'll help with our younger guys,'' Tallon said. ``He's got a little jam, energy, enthusiasm, all those wonderful assets that he brings to the table.''
Simon, 32, had 17 goals, 14 assists and was second in the NHL with 250 penalty minutes in 78 games with the Rangers and Flames last season, coming to Calgary near the trade deadline.
Ritchie, 27, had five goals and six assists in 50 games with the Panthers last season. Like Brown, he became unrestricted after Florida didn't tender him a qualifying offer.
Defenceman Jaroslav Modry was the only unrestricted free agent to change teams Thursday, as the pre-lockout climate slowed down what is usually a first couple of busy days on the free-agent market.

Ich denke RW hatte wir sowieso kaum mehr jemanden und bissl Checking ist immer gut, allerdings kann er manchmal auch einer Mannschaft mit zu viel PMs schaden, ähnlich wie es mit Simon war, als er am Anfang der Saison noch bei uns gespielt hat.
